Mental illness is at all time highs in Australia, each year roughly one in every five Australians will experience a mental illness. It is the third leading cause of disability burden in Australia, accounting for an estimated 27% of the total years lost due to disability.
There is a proven link between a person’s home, community living and relationships and the state of one’s mental health. Having strong social connections with friends, family and the community is an essential ingredient for a productive and fulfilling life.
A great deal of the responsibility shouldered to provide communities that encourage and nurture this environment rest with the various government bodies (Federal, State and Local) through their planning and with the developers who bring the product to market.
The world of today is vastly different to that which we grew up in 30, 20 and even 10 years ago, it is a much smaller place, with so many different daily pressures imposing their will on people every minute of every day.
Our children are being brought into the Information Age, which thrusts every bad news story, every school bully and every negative connotation in their faces, all with the convenience of a swipe of the thumb. It must feel like there is no escape for them!
NEWS FLASH, there is escape for them.
Turn off the phone, iPad or other hand held device, get outside and socialize with your peers, your neighbors, your family and your community. This sounds like an easy solution, but often the environment people are living in does little to entice people out of their homes and interact with their community members.
The “Business as Usual” model of carving of parcels of land, flattening and retaining the heck out of it to fit as many of the biggest 4×2 homes on the smallest blocks possible is not sustainable nor is it conducive to promoting a healthy, happy community living culture.
Residential developments need to provide diversity in product, affordability and access to as many people as possible while coming up with designs that accommodate multi-generational, multi cultural co-habitation.
The “idea” of all age brackets, all family types and all demographics living together in the one sustainable, self sufficient community, sharing responsibilities and having a genuine sense of belonging needs to move from being a concept to reality.
Our mission is one that puts these needs at the forefront of everything we do and hopefully, with the help of enough like minded people we can make it a reality for everyone a lot sooner.
Please help us change the world our children grow up in by sharing this with your family, friends and colleagues.
